Laser surgery is one way to treat thinning hair or bald spots. Lasers have been used in hair transplantation since 1992, although there are now more advanced options for hair transplantation. Transplantation is accomplished by using the laser to create very tiny holes into which hair follicle groupings can be inserted. While there are many advantages to having this procedure, there is a potential that the laser can cause damage to the scalp. However, the technology has improved to make this a rare side effect.
Longevity
All procedures for hair transplant create a lasting head of hair. By taking hair follicles from an area at the back of the head, which is not usually affected by hair loss, and putting them into areas of hair loss, a new source of growing hair is created. Lasers allow the hair to be placed in small groupings for a more natural look.
Less Pain
Laser surgery is less painful that more traditional hair transplant surgeries because the laser can help the surgeon make more precise incisions into the scalp to a depth that does not cause pain. In addition, some surgeons such as Dr. Shagufta Khan at The International Laser Hair Transplant Surgery Center also inject small amounts of saline into the scalp to create a cushion between scalp and skull, making harvesting of the hair less painful, too, even if a laser isn't used.
Less Bleeding
Lasers can create very tiny holes into which follicle grafts can be inserted. Smaller holes more precisely cut mean less blood loss. This is why the International Laser Hair Transplant Surgery Center suggests a laser procedure for clients who have heart disease, high blood pressure, are on blood thinners, have hemophilia or have other bleeding disorders.
