Nutrisystem is a weight loss program featuring pre-packaged foods. It has become popular partially because of ads featuring celebrity endorsements, including Marie Osmond, Belinda Carlisle and Tony Orlando. In order to track progress, Nutrisystem offers many tools, including a food diary intended to help you track how many you calories you eat each day.

Nutrisystem Food

Users who register on the Nutrisystem website, purchase a meal plan and access their personal Nutrisystem page can click the "Diary" tab and choose the day for which they want to make entries. On the "Food Log" screen, there is a drop-down menu for Nutrisystem foods. Enter the products you ate and the amount. The diary will calculate the calories consumed.
While Nutrisystem registration is free, users must pay for the meals. Depending on the program, a four-week supply of Nutrisystem meals costs about $300.

Other Foods

There is another drop-down menu in the food diary for non-Nutrisystem foods. This covers commonly used items found in grocery stores, such as milk, produce, condiments etc. Simply enter which ones you ate for each meal and the amount, and the diary will calculate the total calories consumed. The food diary also makes provisions for dishes you've prepared yourself, such as casseroles and ethnic dishes.

Daily Totals

Nutrisystem's food diary will add up the calories you have consumed for each meal and combine them for a daily total as you make each entry. The totals are saved so you may compare your results from day to day.

Water

The Nutrisystem food diary also will allow you to record the amount of water you drink throughout the day. For every 8 oz. you drink, you may record one glass in the diary.

Other Features

The food diary will allow you to plan what you will eat ahead of time. You are able to delete an entry if you've changed your mind about what you will eat at a particular meal. The system also will allow you to add entries to a previous day as well.
The Nutrisystem food diary also includes a journal section. You may use it to record your thoughts and feelings or the circumstances about changes in your routine. This will help you to notice patterns in your eating habits.

Other Tools

Similar to the food diary, Nutrisystem's website also features an online exercise diary. You record the activities you completed and the time you spent exercising, and the diary calculates the number of calories you burned.
In addition to the food and exercise diaries, Nutrisystem's website also includes a 13-week interactive strategy tool designed to teach skills to control your weight. Other tools include a weight and measurement log, a progress tracking graph, an online newsletter and discussion boards.
