Even if a friend or loved one knows how to eat and exercise, motivation sometimes is difficult to maintain in a weight loss program, especially when there's a lot of weight to lose or when a medical condition makes it difficult to follow a specific diet or exercise regimen. Motivation is key to success, and you can use it to help that person lose weight, yielding big results.
Step 1
Lead by example. If you have weight to lose, get started and make sure your loved one knows about it so she will be inspired to follow.
Step 2
Plan get-togethers that don't involve food. This is especially important if the person trying to lose weight is used to associating fun with food. To make a positive change, organize outings that are active. Go hiking, bike together or join a local sports league.
Step 3
Cook together. Help your friend realize that there are many healthy dishes that taste delicious but don't pack on so many calories. You also can take your friend along when you next go shopping for groceries and suggest healthy choices for his favorite foods.
Step 4
Buy personal training sessions for your friend. Even if she already has a gym membership, there's no better motivation than having a professional guide you through the workout. You also could offer to pay for counseling if your loved one has an emotional eating problem.
Step 5
Reward healthy behavior and celebrate milestones, so your friend knows his hard work doesn't go unnoticed. If he is struggling, offer a supportive ear and help him figure out why he's not losing weight. More than anything, be there, so he knows he's not going through it all alone.
