The Mayo Clinic defines dandruff as a chronic scalp condition marked by itching and flaking of the skin on the scalp. While no scientific studies have been done to demonstrate its efficacy, anecdotal evidence shows apple cider vinegar to be a popular and effective dandruff remedy. Consistent use may reduce or eliminate dandruff symptoms. You can either use apple cider vinegar as a leave-in dandruff treatment or as a pre-treatment in conjunction with anti-dandruff shampoos or a daily shampooing regimen.
Leave-in Method
Step 1
Mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and warm water in a bowl. How much vinegar and water you need will vary depending on how long and thick your hair is; start with 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup water for short hair, then increase as necessary.
Step 2
Stand in the shower, tilt your head back and slowly pour the vinegar-water mixture over your hair. You also can lean your head over the sink, drape a towel around your shoulders to catch any drips, and slowly pour the mixture into your hair.
Step 3
Massage the water-vinegar mixture into your hair as you pour. Some of the mixture will go down the drain; that's alright. Just make sure your hair and scalp are thoroughly wetted down, then allow your hair to dry naturally. There is no need to rinse.
Pre-Treatment
Step 1
Pour 2 to 3 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar into a small cup or bowl, and take this into the shower with you.
Step 2
Wet your hair and scalp down under the shower, then massage the pure apple cider vinegar into your scalp. Don't rinse yet; let the vinegar remain on your scalp for anywhere from 15 minutes to three hours.
Step 3
Rinse your hair and scalp under running water after the wait period is over, then shampoo, lather and rinse as usual, making sure to rub your scalp vigorously with your fingertips to help dislodge any loose skin cells.
