How to Get Rid of Ingrown Hairs From the Bikini Area

When a hair grows back in toward the body, it is called an ingrown hair. This small problem can be rather painful, especially in the bikini area. Ingrown hairs are the result of shaving too close and friction or irritation. They can be prevented by wearing loose-fitting clothing around the area. It is also important to use proper lubrication and a sharp razor when shaving the bikini area. Getting rid of ingrown hairs found in the bikini area can be done with minimal discomfort.

Step 1

Wet a wash cloth with very warm water. Be sure it isn't too hot to be used in the bikini area, but the warmer it is, the more steam there will be.

Step 2

Place the wash cloth over the affected area. Let is sit until the cloth becomes cool.

Step 3

Remove the cloth and examine the area. If you are able to see any part of the hair, then prepare tweezers for removing the ingrown hair.

Step 4

With rubbing alcohol, wipe the tweezers to sterilize them. Repeat this once with a fresh cotton ball to ensure the tweezers are thoroughly clean. With a fresh cotton ball, swab the ingrown hair area to cleanse the skin.

Step 5

Grasp the hair with the tweezers and gently lift upward. The tip of the hair may pop out of the skin. If it does, grasp the hair again and pull it out of the skin. If the tip does not pop out, try the warm compress again. Do not withdraw a hair if the tip has not appeared. This can only cause the skin more irritation and possible infection.

Step 6

After the hair has been withdrawn, wash the area with warm water and soap. Apply a thin layer of antibiotic cream to the skin to prevent infection.

Step 7

Apply hydrocortisone cream to the area when the hair is not visible or cannot be pulled. Keep the area cleansed and free of friction. Use a body powder or cornstarch to help prevent irritation.

Step 8

Begin with the warm compress again after one day or more of waiting for the hair to be visible. Most ingrown hairs will go away on their own.

Step 9

Avoid shaving, and use hydrocortisone cream until the ingrown hair heals.
