The American Academy of Dermatology reports that genital warts are caused by two strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV). These strains only rarely cause cancer; other strains of the virus are commonly implicated in cervical and other cancers. The Academy recommends that genital warts be removed. Evidence does not indicate that removing genital warts causes cancer.
