Puffy eyelids occur when the tone and firmness of the eyelids is compromised by something, perhaps an allergy, poor sleep habits or simply as part of growing older. Whatever the reason, no one wants to have puffy eyelids. Knowing the cause can help to find a solution to reduce puffiness and improve the overall tone and appearance of the eyes.
Causes
Puffy eyelids may be caused by certain medical disorders or eye injuries. In these situations, medical assistance may be helpful in resolving the cause. Poor sleep habits can also affect the tissue surrounding the eyes. In these cases, the areas affected may also look puffy due to fluids collecting in the tissues. Puffy eyelids are also a common result of the natural aging process. As we age, the muscles that support the tissues around the eye begin to weaken. Fat deposits that support the eye move into the spaces around the eye, particularly into the lids. This gives them a puffy appearance.
Symptoms
In most cases, the eyelids look swollen and may be unsightly. Loose or sagging skin may also occur. Swollen, puffy eyelids are frequently accompanied by dark circles under the eyes. For medical causes of puffy eyelids, such as an allergic reaction, redness, itching and discomfort may also occur. If puffy eyelids are only one of a number of symptoms, see your doctor.
Home Solutions
Treatment for puffy eyelids may be as simple as placing a cold compress on the eyes to reduce swelling. You can use cold teabags; black tea has astringents that can help to tighten the skin. Getting enough sleep at night and sleeping in a more upright position can also help. There are also many over-the-counter products designed to reduce swelling, improve the tone, and tighten the skin around the eyes, thereby reducing puffiness.
Medical Treatments
In some cases of puffy eyelids, medications can be prescribed to treat the underlying condition, such as kidney or thyroid disorders, eye infections, high blood pressure, an injury to the eyes or an allergic reaction. In the process, this can help to decrease the inflammation around the eyes and reduce puffiness of the eyelids.
Surgical Treatments
Laser treatments that remove wrinkles may help to tighten the skin around the eye and improve its tone. In severe cases, a surgical procedure, known as a blepheroplasty may be performed. In this procedure, the surgeon will remove excess fat and sagging skin within the eyelid. The incision and stitches are placed along the natural crease in the eye to conceal scarring and give the eye a natural appearance after the surgery.
