Medications to Treat Congestive Heart Failure

Congestive heart failure (CHF) refers to a serious and potentially fatal condition in which the heart no longer distributes enough blood to the body. Symptoms of heart failure include fatigue, an irregular heartbeat, chest pain, trouble concentrating, and swelling of the legs, feet or ankles. CHF also leads to stomach swelling (ascites) and shortness of breath.

Enalapril

Enalapril is an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that blocks the enzyme (ACE) from constricting blood vessels. This allows for more blood flow toward the heart. Drugs.com says Enalapril's common side effects include a cough, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, trouble sleeping, dizziness and a poor appetite. Enalapril also causes a headache, diarrhea and a skin rash. Enalapril's serious side effects include fainting, lightheadedness, body aches, chills and a fast or pounding heartbeat. Easy bruising or bleeding, decreased urination and flu-like symptoms are Enalapril's other serious effects. Drugs.com says Enalapril should not be used while pregnant as it can lead to birth defects. Enalapril is a tablet that should be taken as prescribed.

Digoxin

Digoxin is a medication typically used to treat heart rhythm disorders that may occur as a result of congestive heart failure. MedlinePlus says side effects include an irregular heartbeat, drowsiness, visual changes, dizziness, lightheadedness and drowsiness. Digoxin's serious side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, swelling of the feet or hands, a poor appetite, swelling of the feet or hands and stomach problems. Digoxin is taken as a tablet, liquid or capsule once a day or as directed.

Bumetanide

Bumetanide is a diuretic medication used to get rid of any excess fluid that accumulates when suffering from congestive heart failure. MedlinePlus says Bumetanide's common side effects include muscle cramps, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, stomach problems and dizziness. Bumetanide's serious side effects include loss of hearing, ringing of the ears, peeling skin, a fever, sore throat and trouble breathing or swallowing. Taking corticosteroids, indomethacin, lithium and probenacid with Bumetanide may lead to drug interactions. The combination may also lead to a decrease in Bumetanide's effectiveness. Bumetanide is a tablet typically taken once a day in the morning.
