Blackheads are caused by the pores becoming clogged with bacteria, sebum and other impurities. When these impurities are lodged inside the pores, they oxidize and turn brown. This appears black from a distance, hence the name "blackhead." In order to effectively treat and eliminate blackheads from the face, the pores must be flush of their blockages, the skin must be exfoliated to remove dead skin cells that could clog the pores, and toned to increase skin cell turnover.
Step 1
Empty the pores by applying a pore-flushing oil facial. Pour 1 to 2 tsp. of castor oil into your hand, and smooth it gently onto the face. Use your fingers to massage the oil deeply into your skin for one to two minutes. Drape a steaming-hot washcloth onto your face, which will cover the skin with steam to open the pores and release the oils and impurities. Once the cloth cools, use it to wipe off the oil. Repeat two times per day.
Step 2
Remove dead skin cells by applying a baking soda scrub. Pour 1 tbsp. of baking soda into your palm, and drizzle in 1 tsp. of water. Spread the baking soda mixture onto your skin, and use your fingers to lightly massage the mixture around using small, circular motions. After one to two minutes, rinse off the baking soda mixture using water. Repeat two times per day.
Step 3
Increase skin cell turnover by applying a lemon juice toner. Fill an empty spray bottle with 8 oz. of concentrated lemon juice, and spray the skin liberally after it has been cleansed or exfoliated. Let the skin dry naturally. Repeat two times per day.
Tips and Warnings
- Castor oil is a non-comedogenic oil, meaning it does not clog the pores when applied to the skin. Castor oil is highly purgative, and will flush out impurities from the pores. Applying steam to the skin opens up the pores, allowing the impurities and oils to drain out. Removing dead skin cells prevents the cells from becoming clogged inside the pores, which can cause and exacerbate blackheads. Lemon juice is high in vitamin C, which increases skin cell turnover when applied to the skin. When the skin cell turnover is increased, new skin cells are encouraged to develop faster, while dead skin cells are sloughed away more quickly. This keeps the pores free of impurities more easily.
