Side Effects of Dental Surgery

Improved dental surgery techniques do not completely prevent the normal health risks that accompany all surgeries. Swelling needs to be controlled with cold packs, and any bleeding managed. It is common for the surgical site to sustain trauma during dental procedures. Because side effects of dental surgery can progress to more serious conditions, it is imperative to be familiar with them.

Clotting Problems

Some bleeding and clotting occur following surgical tooth extractions. Clotting helps in the healing process so it is important not to smoke, rinse the mouth vigorously or drink through a straw the first 24 hours to avoid dislodging the clot, according to the American Dental Association. If a clot does not form or breaks off, the underlying bone may be exposed causing more pain. It will need to be treated further with medication for pain and to promote healing.

Tooth Weakness

Root canal treatment makes a tooth more vulnerable to fracture as there is no longer any pulp to keep the tooth alive. The diseased pulp in the tooth has been removed and the root canals have been cleaned. The tooth becomes brittle. Crowns are usually placed over the tooth following the root canal treatment to protect the tooth. If a crown is not placed, chances are high that the tooth will crack.

Swelling

Swelling usually follows extractions and root canal treatment. Ice packs are used to keep the swelling down. This side effect should diminish within 2 to 3 days.

Infections

Dental implant surgery may result in infection at the site of the surgery. There can be nerve damage and sinus problems if the implants are placed in the upper jaw. The problems with implant surgery are rare and easily treated, according to the Mayo Clinic. Infections can also occur during gum surgery when periodontal disease is being treated. Report any persistent or worsening discomfort to your dentist following gum or implant surgery.
