Urinary tract infections (UTIs) occur when bacteria invade the bladder or surrounding urinary areas. Symptoms of a UTI include itching, pain and urgency---the need to urinate often and immediately. Although UTIs are relatively common, repeated occurrences may signify a worse prognosis such as interstitial cystitis. In addition to self-care routines, cranberry products and antibiotics to treat the infection, a number of herbal products are available to reduce pain and hasten healing of UTIs.
Butterbur
Although butterbur is more well known as a treatment for allergies, migraines and digestive problems, its antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties are reportedly useful for urinary inflammation and infection, as well, according to "Guide to Natural Products." Clinical studies have not been performed to support or refute butterbur use for UTIs. The herb is associated, however, with drug interactions and side effects, so consult a physician before use.
Purslane
An unusual but ancient herb that has reported benefits for UTI is purslane. In addition to antioxidant and vitamin-providing benefits, purslane stimulates the kidneys to cleanse the urinary tract, has a purported cooling effect on the bladder and---most importantly---has antibacterial properties, says Drugs.com. This herbal remedy is considered safe even at high doses, although its complete side effects have not been studied fully.
Slippery Elm
Slippery elm is a Native American remedy for many conditions that require soothing or coating effects such as ulcers, UTIs and sore throats. The bark of this herb develops a mucus-like coating when it gets wet, and the thick coating might soothe damaged skin or linings of organs including the bladder. The coating effect appears useful for cystitis and bladder inflammation, although adequate effective doses have not been determined.
