Racquetball Tips

Racquetball will help you burn fat and calories when you play for an hour in an enclosed court. It is also an extremely competitive game and when people start to play, it almost always turns into a competitive match. While the game is largely dependent on speed, agility and anticipation, there are a number of strategies you can employ to help you win matches.

Shot Placement

When you are waiting for a return in the middle of the court, use the ball's height as the key to the strategy you will use. If the ball is shoulder height or above, go for the ceiling shot. If the ball is between thigh height and shoulder height, go for the passing shot. If you the ball is thigh height or lower, go for the kill shot. Trying to turn a head-high shot into a kill shot is almost always a mistake.

Serving

Mix up your serves. Don't always go for the power serve. Make sure you mix in a lob serve and don't forget about a backhands serve. Look at your opponent's feet before you serve. Those feet may give you a hint that he is anticipating a shot to his backhand. If you can see and sense that, hit it to his forehand. While you can occasionally overpower your opponent with a serve, you will do better to outthink him. Pick up on his cues and try to fool him.

Wrist Snap

When you make contact with the ball, your wrist should snap forward. This is how you get your power in this game. Your arm speed will not necessarily help you hit a hard shot. However, your wrist snap will keep the ball going in the right direction and give you the velocity you are looking for.

Opponent Position

Your opponent's position will have a lot to do with how you hit your next shot. If your opponent is in front of you, use a ceiling to hit it by him. If your opponent is even with you, use a passing shot to hit it deep. If your opponent is behind you, hit a pinch shot (front wall to side wall) in order to make him run and dive to retrieve the ball.
