Acne breakouts can often leave behind unsightly skin discolorations and hyperpigmentation that can take weeks, or sometimes even months, to fully diminish from the skin. Luckily, a routine can be used on the skin that will soften the scarred tissue, exfoliate the softened skin discolorations and increase the rate at which the skin will develop new cells. These treatments will diminish the scarring more quickly.

Step 1

Soften scarred tissues by applying an olive oil facial steam. Spread 1 tsp. of olive oil onto the skin, and use the fingers to massage it deeply into the skin for three minutes. Spread an additional 1 tsp. of olive oil onto the skin, leaving it on the skin for five minutes. Fill a bowl with very hot, steaming water. Place the bowl onto a flat counter, and lean over the bowl no nearer than 12 inches. Cover the head with a towel, and steam the skin for five minutes. Wipe off the skin with a wet washcloth. Repeat up to three times per week.

Step 2

Exfoliate the softened skin discolorations by applying a baking soda scrub, suggests Armhammer.com. Pour 1 tbsp. of pure baking soda into your hand, and pour 1 tsp. of water onto it. Use your finger to mix the substances well, and spread the mixture onto your face. Massage the baking soda mixture into your skin with your fingers for 1 to 2 minutes. Rinse off the skin with water. Repeat up to three times per week.

Step 3

Increase the rate at which new skin cells develop by applying a lemon juice compress, which is high in vitamin C. Soak five cotton pads in concentrated lemon juice. Squeeze the excess juice out of the cotton pads with your fingers. Place the pad onto your skin; one for your chin, two for your forehead, and one for each cheek. Leave the compresses on your skin for at least 15 minutes, then remove them to let the skin dry. Repeat up to three times per week.

Tips and Warnings

  • Helpful Information: Olive oil and steam soften scarred, dry, tough skin cells to allow them to be removed more easily. Olive oil is a noncomedogenic oil, meaning it does not clog the pores when applied to the skin. Baking soda is a useful skin exfoliant that can remove softened skin discolorations without scratching or damaging the surface of the skin. Lemon juice is high in vitamin C, which supports the skin in sloughing off dead, scarred skin cells, while increases the rate at which new skin cells are developed.
