What Are Yeast Infection Symptoms?

A vaginal yeast infection occurs when there is an irritation to the vagina and vulva (opening to the vagina). It is caused by the fungus Candida albican, which is normally found in small amounts in the vagina. However, if too much of this bacteria is present, you can develop a yeast infection. This can be the result of stress, insomnia, a diet high in sugary foods, pregnancy, certain medications and other situations. While yeast infections are normally thought of as a female condition, men can get genital yeast infections, too. If you notice the signs or symptoms, there are over-the-counter and prescription strength treatments available.

Common Symptoms

Woman's Health.gov states that the most common symptom of a vaginal yeast infection is extreme itchiness near the vagina. Other common symptoms include burning sensations, redness, soreness, pain and swelling in and around the vagina or vulva. These symptoms can range from mild to severe. They may occur just once, or you may experience recurrent infections.

Additional Symptoms

A yeast infection can also cause painful intercourse, painful urination and/or the development of a rash in or around the vagina. According to the National Institutes of Health, you may notice a a thick, white vaginal discharge, a watery discharge or a lumpy white discharge that resembles cottage cheese.

Other Symptoms

In some cases, the symptoms of a yeast infection can mimic those of sexually transmitted diseases such as Chlamydia and gonorrhea. If you are unsure, your doctor can run tests to confirm a diagnosis. You should seek medical care if you are pregnant, you develop a fever, your symptoms do not respond to medication within a week, your symptoms continue to get worse or you experience frequent infections.

Male Yeast Infection Symptoms

The Mayo Clinic states that while rare, men can develop a genital yeast infection through unprotected sex with an infected female. Long-term use of antibiotics or having conditions such as HIV/AIDS, diabetes and other chronic conditions may place a man at a higher risk. Male yeast infection symptoms include itching or burning sensations at the tip of the penis and/or the development of a reddish rash.
