Solodyn for Acne

Solodyn is a tetracycline antibiotic known as minocycline, commonly prescribed to treat acne that has not responded to topical therapy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved minocycline for treating severe forms of acne, but Solodyn is the only brand of minocycline approved to treat moderate acne. Solodyn has a time-release action that may be less likely to cause side effects.

Function

Acne results from overactive sebaceous glands producing excess oil. This prevents dead skin cells from sloughing away, which then clog pores and create a favorable environment for anaerobic bacteria that cause acne. Solodyn kills bacteria and inhibits further bacterial growth, and also reduces inflammation. Even when pimples do develop, the redness, soreness and swelling are reduced.

Identification

Minocycline is one of several cycline antibiotics prescribed to treat acne, all of which have "very good efficacy," according to a study published in the November-December 2004 issue of the "European Journal of Dermatology." Solodyn is approved to treat moderate acne and severe cystic acne, which involves painful pus-filled lesions prone to cause scarring. Dosage is based on the patient's weight.

Solodyn Advantages

Solodyn is an extended-release form of minocycline. The time-release action has some advantages. The patient is less likely to miss a dose because it is taken only once a day. Solodyn may be less likely to cause certain side effects associated with minocycline, including dizziness and headaches. Patients are usually advised to take minocycline on an empty stomach because food decreases its absorption; however, Solodyn can be taken with or without food. Patients should drink plenty of fluids when taking Solodyn to prevent the pill from sticking in the esophagus.

Side Effects

Many side effects are possible with Solodyn, but most are minor and temporary. A significant common side effect is increased sensitivity to ultraviolet light, which can lead to sunburn. Gastrointestinal side effects may include indigestion, lack of appetite, nausea and diarrhea. Patients also may experience dizziness, light-headedness, fatigue and headaches. Taking Solodyn for a prolonged time frame can cause skin discoloration that looks like bruising, but this eventually disappears after usage is discontinued.

Warning

Solodyn, like other antibiotics, can lead to severe colitis because antibiotics kill friendly bacteria in the gastrointestinal system. Solodyn use also is linked to pseudotumor cerebri, which causes high pressure inside the skull. This condition usually resolves once the patient discontinues the drug, although medication may also be necessary. Pregnant women should not take Solodyn because it can cause birth defects. Development of lupus is a side effect for about 1 of 10,000 patients taking minocycline for acne treatment, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology.
