Atacand (Candesartan) is a prescription medication that is classified as an angiotensin-receptor blocker. It is available as an 8-mg tablet and is indicated for the treatment of essential hypertension (high blood pressure) and the treatment of heart failure. It blocks the constriction of blood vessels and prevents the reabsorption of sodium and water in the body, both of which may increase high blood pressure and worsen heart failure. Atacand 8 mgs is well tolerated overall, but some side effects have been seen in a few individuals.
Common Side Effects
Atacand 8 mgs has been linked to many side effects. These include dizziness, lightheadedness, headache and drowsiness. They occur in 4 percent of people and usually decrease as your body adjusts to the medication. Avoid operating a vehicle or heavy machinery, or any other activity that requires alertness until your body has grown accustomed to the drug. Upper respiratory tract infections are also common and may occur in about 6 percent of individuals; back pain occurs in about 3 percent.
Hypotension
Atacand has the potential to cause hypotension, which is a drop in blood pressure below normal. This is usually seen in the treatment of heart failure and occurs in about 19 percent of people who have chronic heart failure (CHF). Hypotension may occur during the treatment of hypertension when treatment includes other medications, such as diuretics.
Renal Function
Changes in renal function may be seen with Atacand during hypertension treatment, particularly in patients who have renal impairment. Close monitoring is required in patients with heart failure, especially in those over 75 and who have renal impairment. About 13 percent of people with CHF have an increased serum creatinine (a measure of kidney function) and 6 percent stop the medication because of this. Though these side effects can occur with higher doses of the drug, keep your doctor informed of any changes in the frequency or amount of urination and any changes in the color of the urine.
Hyperkalemia
Atacand causes the elimination of sodium in the body, which in turn causes potassium to accumulate in the body. This has the potential to cause hyperkalemia, or increase in potassium levels. Call your physician right away if you experience fast, slow or pounding heartbeat, or muscle pain, tenderness or weakness. Hyperkalemia has been seen in up to 6 percent of people but is associated with higher doses of Atacand.
Angioedema
Atacand has the potential to cause a serious side effect called angioedema, which causes swelling of tongue, lips and throat. Though angioedema is very rare, it can be life threatening and requires immediate medical help.
