Scleroderma is an autoimmune medical condition that affects the connective tissue in the body. Skin, internal organs, blood vessels and muscles all have connective tissue and may experience symptoms of scleroderma. According to Medline Plus, there is no known cause or cure for the condition. Individuals suffering from scleroderma gradually get worse and commonly die from its complications. The symptoms range from mild to severe and include some that are manageable with treatment and others that are life threatening.
Raynaud's Phenomenon
Raynaud's phenomenon is a condition associated with scleroderma. Many individuals with scleroderma also suffer from the symptoms of Raynaud's phenomenon. This condition causes an extreme body reaction to cold temperatures. Emotional stress may also cause the phenomenon. The blood vessels in the extremities constrict causing the fingers and toes to turn blue, red or purple and the hands and feet to experience pain and numbness.
Skin Symptoms
Scleroderma changes the normal condition of skin. It may appear darker or lighter than normal and becomes hardened and thick. The skin on the face tightens and no longer allows free movement of facial muscles. Ulcers may occur on the fingers and toes. Because of the skin changes there may be hair loss on the scalp and body. The Mayo Clinic states that the skin may also appear shiny from stretching tightly. White bumps can appear under the skin.
Pain
Your joints may feel stiff and sore with scleroderma. The pain may become severe at times. According to Medline Plus, joints such as those of the wrists, fingers and feet are susceptible to pain and stiffness associated with the condition. Medications and physical therapy may help improve the pain.
GERD
If you have scleroderma you may experience symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Heartburn, difficulty swallowing and abdominal bloating may occur with the acid reflux. The condition may lead to weight loss.
Intestinal Distress
Episodes of diarrhea and constipation are common with scleroderma. Intestinal cramping, bloating and discomfort may accompany the diarrhea or constipation.
Breathing Difficulty
Scleroderma can cause extreme damage to your lungs, especially harming the main arteries leading to the lungs. Evidence of the tissue changes in the lungs includes a cough, shortness of breath and wheezing.
