Changes in the chemical balance of the vagina can cause the normal fungi of the vagina to grow too rapidly and cause an infection called a yeast infection. These infections in women are common. In fact, three out of four women will have a yeast infection at some point in their life, says the Cleveland Clinic, and half of all women will experience more than one in their lifetimes. To treat the yeast infection as soon as possible, women should learn to recognize the symptoms of yeast infections.
Abnormal Discharge
Abnormal vaginal discharge can be indicative of a yeast infection, according to Medline Plus. This discharge ranges in consistency but includes discharge that is watery, thick or chunky like cottage cheese. This discharge is typically odorless, says the Cleveland Clinic.
Itching
Itchiness is the most common sign of a vaginal yeast infection, according to the National Women's Health Information Center. This itching can occur in and around the vagina and vulva, and is usually quite intense.
Redness or Irritation
The skin surrounding the lips of the vagina and the vagina may become swollen, red and irritated when a yeast infection is present. A vaginal rash may also develop. However, according to the Cleveland Clinic, these symptoms are not as commonly experienced as the itching and unusual discharge.
Burning
A painful burning sensation can also accompany a yeast infection, states the American Academy of Family Physicians. This sensation typically occurs when having sexual intercourse or urinating.
