Different Types of Golf Bags Explained

There are several types of golf bags. The Rules of Golf allow you to have as many as 14 clubs in your bag; golfers who play with the maximum number of clubs, or who want to carry a rain suit or other odds and ends, will need a stronger and heavier bag for their clubs. If you are traveling, however, you might prefer a much smaller and lighter bag.

Tour Bags

The tour bag is the largest bag available. As the name indicates, it also is the type of golf bag used by most touring pros. It has enough room for 14 clubs and also plenty of room for any piece of equipment you might need on the golf course. This includes your rain suit, an extra pair of golf shoes and an umbrella. This kind of bag is usually carried by a caddy and is almost always made out of leather.

Carry Bags

This type of bag is typically used by younger and stronger players who don't have a caddy and are not riding in a cart. They are carrying their bag for 18 holes, and that 3 1/2-mile trek can be quite taxing--even when your are carrying a bag that is lighter than many others. The average carry bag will hold 10 to 12 clubs, golf balls and personal accessories, such as a wallet and a cell phone.

Cart Bags

The cart bag is bigger than the carry bag, but not as large as the tour bag. It will fit in a cart and has room for the maximum number of clubs. It can also hold your rain clothes, a dozen balls, tees and a tool to repair ball marks.

Sunday Bag

The Sunday bag is a small, lightweight bag, usually made out of cloth. You might want to keep one in your car to use when all you need is four or five clubs to play a Par-3 course or to hit the driving range at a moment's notice. Put four clubs in your Sunday bag and you are ready to go.
