How to Correct a Memory Loss

Memory loss can be due to a number of causes, even though most people associate it with getting older. If you are experiencing memory loss, don't immediately assume that it is due to age. A number of factors, including diet, stress and lack of exercise can influence how well you remember things. You can also correct a memory loss.

Step 1

Take a multivitamin. Several nutrients are essential to memory, including the B vitamins, which break down toxic amino acids and help build up red cell numbers. Antioxidants (like vitamins C, E and A) fight free radicals, keeping cells young.

Step 2

Take a supplement of omega-3 fatty acids or eat more foods high in these nutrients, as they help with cognitive function. Good sources include salmon, tuna and other cold-water fatty fish. Vegetarians can try flaxseed oil and walnuts.

Step 3

Sleep more. Loss of memory could be due to stress, both physical and mental, as well as lack of sleep. Since memory consolidates while you're sleeping, skipping time in bed may lead to difficulty concentrating and remembering things. Most people need between six and nine hours of sleep.

Step 4

Exercise regularly. Ideally you should be moving for at least half an hour each day. Aerobic exercise increases oxygen flow to the brain, enhancing memory and protecting brain cells. If you can't make it to the gym, take a walk or ride your bike for equally good results.

Step 5

Take a ginkgo biloba supplement. While studies at Oregon State University show that ginkgo does not help with memory loss in the elderly (those 85 and up), people who took the supplement regularly did fare better in memory tests. Supplements can be found at health food stores and pharmacies and should be taken daily.

Step 6

Reduce the amount of alcohol and coffee you drink. Coffee seems to improve concentration in the short-term, but both drinks affect long-term memory and may destroy brain cells.
