A yeast infection can occur on any region of the body and is caused by an overgrowth of a yeast called Candida. This condition, which is also referred to as thrush, can cause symptoms to develop in people of any age---infants, children, adolescents or adults. Treatment of a severe yeast infection typically involves the use of a prescription medication, such as an antibiotic.

White Skin Patches

If a severe yeast infection develops in the mouth, you can develop white patches of skin along the gum line, tongue or cheeks. The infection can also spread down into the throat and esophagus, which can cause a sore throat or difficulty swallowing, explains the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Oral yeast infections occur most frequently in infants and the elderly. Additional symptoms can include irritation or sensitivity within the mouth due to these white skin lesions.

Itching

A severe yeast infection of the skin or genitals can cause intense itching or burning. Excessive scratching of these infected skin regions can cause redness, irritation, inflammation or pain. In infants, a severe yeast infection of the genitals is frequently referred to as diaper rash. If this condition develops, your infant may develop redness or irritation of the skin underneath the diaper. A rash or skin sores can also develop, which may be accompanied by the appearance of red pimples or cracking skin. These lesions can bleed or ooze liquid in severe cases of infection, the North Dakota Department of Health reports.

Discharge

A genital yeast infection can cause abnormal discharge to develop. Women and men with this condition can experience discharge that is thick, white and resembles cottage cheese. Though typically odorless, the genital discharge may emit a yeasty odor.

Painful Urination

If you develop a severe genital yeast infection you could experience painful urination. This typically occurs as the result of excessive scratching of the sensitive genital skin. Scratching can cause tiny tears in the skin of the genitals, which can cause you to experience a painful burning sensation during urination.

Painful Intercourse

Inflammation of the genital area as a result of a severe yeast infection can make this region of your body extremely sensitive. Any type of intimate contact---especially sexual intercourse---can be painful if you have a genital yeast infection. Your genital region may be swollen or sore due to the yeast infection, which can make contact uncomfortable.
