There isn't one surefire method for getting rid of both stretch marks and cellulite. Though weight gain can contribute to either condition, the actual cause is quite different, so you'll need to rely on separate treatments. With stretch marks, the pulling of the skin can reduce the strength of the elastic fibers in the epidermis, causing streaks. Cellulite is a result of weakening collagen that allows fat cells to "bulge" up, causing dimpling of the skin.
Stretch Marks
Step 1
Give stretch marks, or striae, time to fade. Before using any sort of remedy, the National Institutes of Health suggest you allow time for the stretch marks to fade, since they can vanish after the source of their formation has been reduced or removed.
Step 2
Apply a medicated cream directly to the stretch marks. According to the Mayo Clinic, creams containing tretinoin can help with more recent stretch marks. Always follow your doctor's prescription when using this medication.
Step 3
Try microdermabrasion to remove stretch marks. Commonly used for older striae, small crystals essentially "sand away" the surface layer of the marks, according to the Mayo Clinic. This allows for new epidermal growth that is more even with the rest of your skin.
Step 4
Consider laser resurfacing. Laser resurfacing encourages the dermis to produce additional collagen that fills in the stretch marks, evening them out with the rest of your skin. Like microdermabrasion, it works best on older markings, but you may also see a benefit in recent striae.
Step 5
Talk to your doctor about laser therapy. Laser therapy is different than laser resurfacing. With this form of treatment, your doctor is hoping to improve the pigmentation of the marks, so that lighter striae become closer in color with the rest of your skin, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Cellulite
Step 1
Try dropping some weight. If your cellulite has formed due to weight gain, the Mayo Clinic advises that weight loss can reduce the signs of dimpling. Results vary from person to person.
Step 2
Tone and strengthen the legs. The Mayo Clinic also advises exercises that tone and strengthen areas of the body suffering from cellulite. Biking, running and weight training can all improve the appearance of cellulite.
Step 3
Try laser therapy. Different than the laser therapy used for stretch marks, this form of treatment combines low-level lasers with deep tissue massage to remove dimpling from the skin. However, results are often short-lived, and you'll need additional laser therapy sessions after six months.
Step 4
Try radiofrequency therapy. Like laser therapy, radiofrequency therapy uses energy coupled with massage to remove dimpling from the skin. According to the Mayo Clinic, radio waves, infrared light and massage are administered to areas of the skin suffering from cellulite. The results are temporary, and you'll need additional sessions in about six months time.
