Acne can happen anywhere on the body but most often occurs on the face, neck, chest and back. There are many acne-fighting products on the market, including toners, creams and lotions. One of the most effective acne treatments is benzoyl peroxide cream, which should be used in the lower strengths to avoid irritation. Although benzoyl peroxide cream can be used easily on the face, neck or chest, it can be difficult to reach and apply the cream to the back. One way around this is to utilize a back scratcher to enable you to reach and apply products to the areas of the back affected by acne.
Step 1
Wash the back with a natural soap that is free of artificial ingredients, such as sodium lauryl sulfate or petroleum, which can irritate and inflame acne-prone skin. Attach a washcloth to the end of a back scratcher, using a rubber band, and wet it thoroughly. Lather the washcloth with the natural soap. Wet your back, and lather it well using the washcloth attached to the back scratcher. Rinse the area well with water. Repeat two times per day.
Step 2
Medicate the back with a lower-concentration benzoyl peroxide cream, such as 2.5 to 5 percent in strength. Attach a fresh washcloth to the end of a back scratcher, using a rubber band. Squeeze a quarter-sized amount of benzoyl peroxide cream onto the washcloth. Gently spread the cream onto your back, using the washcloth attached to the back scratcher, until the cream has absorbed into your skin. Repeat two times per day.
Step 3
Moisturize the back with an oil-free moisturizer, which will keep the skin hydrated without causing more acne. Attach a fresh washcloth to the end of a back scratcher, using a rubber band. Squeeze a quarter-sized amount of an oil-free moisturizer onto the washcloth. Gently apply the moisturizer to your back with the washcloth attached to the back scratcher. Repeat two times per day.
Tips and Warnings
- Look for a soap that contains simple, basic ingredients, such as coconut oil, olive oil and beeswax. Using a lower-strength benzoyl peroxide cream will clear acne without causing the severe side effects, such as redness, peeling or burning, that 10 percent benxoyl peroxide cream does. Always follow benzoyl peroxide cream with an oil-free moisturizer, which will prevent the skin from drying out from the medicated cream.
