The joys of motherhood are highly anticipated by most mothers before the birth of their child. While many mothers embrace motherhood and appear to be cool, calm and collected, they can still be facing stress within their personal life. When a woman becomes a mother, the rest of her life isn't always put on hold. The multitasking of day-to-day living combined with raising a child presents new challenges. There are several reasons why stress may arise in motherhood.
Care of the Child
A large contributor to motherhood and stress is the direct care of the child. A natural instinct for many mothers is to make sure that they are giving the best care for their child. Bathing and feeding them correctly can lead to stress when other mothers or other people lend advice on ways to do it differently. Sleeping patterns, diet and developmental issues can also be stressful for a new mother. Lack of Assistance
In some cases, the lack of overall help or assistance can be very stressful for the mother. Having an extra pair of hands or someone to help with late-night feedings is always a benefit. If the mom is a single mom or has a husband who works a lot of hours, she may not have a great deal of support with raising the baby. Some mothers can feel overwhelmed if they have to provide constant care to a newborn or small child without any relief throughout the day. This can lead to stress and anxiety.
Balancing Work and Motherhood
Many mothers have to work to help support themselves and their family. Stress from work and lack of time being spent with their child and family can compound feelings into stress and regret. Some mothers have to place their child into daycare while they work, and this can cause separation anxiety between both the mother and child.
Financial Woes
Some mothers go through financial strains and hardships as they raise their child. This could be the loss of a job, unforeseen medical expenses or accrued debt. Financial problems can cause stress levels to escalate, especially when it becomes harder and more difficult to meet the financial and lifestyle needs of the family. Some mothers are single parents, making it harder to make ends meet, and this causes additional stress and pressure.
Personal Care
Many mothers refrain from taking care of themselves during motherhood, and this includes getting enough sleep. When you fail to take care of yourself or get enough sleep, stress can be harder to deal with. Taking care of yourself could mean napping, exercising, getting hair and makeup done or buying new clothes. Spending time with your peers or finding a new hobby are equally important in keeping motherhood balanced and healthy.
