Ginger Root Tea Benefits

Ginger has been used since ancient times as a natural ingredient in tea and for medicinal purposes. Though the ginger plant is native to Southeast Asia, it is also grown in tropical regions such as Jamaica. Ginger root tea is believed to provide a myriad of benefits to overall health. Medical studies about these benefits, however, are ongoing with some supporting health claims and some not. A few slices or slivers of fresh ginger root topped with boiling water create a tea that is aromatic, soothing and possibly medicinal, too.

Chemotherapy

Ginger root tea might help limit the length and intensity of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Ginger tea is believed to soothe the stomach by blocking serotonin receptors in the stomach and digestive tract, says the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Some patients note that the aroma of ginger tea is soothing to the stomach, as well.

Post-surgical

Ingesting ginger root tea prior to surgery can also work to reduce the incidence of nausea and vomiting after surgery. The regular consumption of ginger tea may help reduce the incidence of stomach upset or vomiting during the post-operative period. Consult your physician about drinking ginger root tea prior to, or following, surgery.

Motion Sickness

Ginger tea might also be helpful in preventing motion sickness, according to the NCI. Drinking ginger tea before an experience that may induce motion sickness---a boat ride or long car drive, for instance---can work to calm the body and prevent illness.

Cold Symptoms

Ginger tea may also be effective in providing relief from colds and congestion, notes the American Cancer Society. Ginger tea will help the body feel warmer as it causes dilation of the blood vessels. It can limit chills and also help reduce congestion in sinuses or the chest. A warm cup of ginger tea could have medicinal purposes to help relieve symptoms of winter colds and coughs that are not yet fully medically documented.
