Nail fungus--a medical condition referred to as onychomycosis--is an infection of the nail caused by the presence of fungi. You can develop nail fungus if you have recently injured your nail, wear tight-fitting shoes or are frequently exposed to warm, moist environments. People over the age of 60, especially those who smoke or have diabetes, are at an increased risk of developing nail fungus. The symptoms of nail fungus can affect one or more nails on your toes or hands. Treatment of this condition typically involves the use of antifungal medication.
Brittle Nails
A fungal infection of the nail can cause nails to become brittle. Brittle nails can break or crumble easily and can appear ragged or uneven across the top of the nail. If this occurs, the skin beneath the nail can become infected and cause additional symptoms to develop, such as pain or inflammation.
Thickened Nails
If you have a nail fungus, your nails can thicken significantly. If this occurs, your nails may be difficult to cut, making healthy nail care problematic.
Discolored Nails
Discoloration of the nail bed is a common symptom of nail fungus. Nails can appear yellowish and dull. Debris can build up underneath the nail and cause a dark color to develop, doctors at The Mayo Clinic explain.
Nail Pain
If you have a fungal nail infection, you can experience pain within the nails as a result of this condition. Damaged nails can cause the infection to spread beneath the nail and cause inflammation, swelling or irritation to occur. If you develop nail pain due to a fungal infection, you may have difficulty performing normal activities, such as walking or running.
Distorted Nails
An infection of the nails caused by fungus can alter the shape of the nail. You can develop distorted, bumpy or unsightly nails.
Nail Detachment
If left untreated, a fungal nail infection can cause the nail to become detached from the nail bed--a condition referred to as onycholysis. This can cause significant nail pain and can leave the skin beneath the nail susceptible to infection. Some people may also notice that a foul odor emits from the site of the nail infection.
