Free weights offer a great number of benefits over machines and other exercise equipment. They provide a greater range of motion than machines, helping to improve muscle strength and tone. Free weights also are far more versatile than machines--a set of dumbbells equates an almost limitless amount of exercises. Additionally, free weights require the stabilizing muscles to be active, where most machines do not work these important muscles. Finally, free weights are far more portable than any machine, as many machines are supposed to be bolted to the ground to prevent them from falling over.
Adjustable Dumbbells
Adjustable dumbbells should top any list for home free weights. Dumbbells can be used to mimic virtually every exercise seen in a gym. Adjustable dumbbells make the list over regular dumbbells because they offer a greater range of weight in a much smaller space, and usually are much cheaper than a whole set. (Bowflex makes two pairs--one ranging from 10 to 90 lb. and one ranging from 5 to 52.5 lb.)
Adjustable Kettlebells
Adjustable kettlebells are also an important part of a home free weight system. Kettlebells are very versatile--they can be used for a variety of exercises. They differ from dumbbells in that they are used in very complex exercises. Most of the exercises involving kettlebells involve powerful movements of both the arms and legs. While this may scare some people off, these movements greatly increase core strength, as well as general strength of the entire body, helping to increase weight loss.
Removable Pull-Up Bar
Every home gym should contain a removable pull-up bar. Pull-ups remain one of the best exercises on the planet. Removable pull-up bars are recommended because they can also be used for push-ups and dips. Even if you aren't strong enough to do pull-ups, you can use the bar to hang resistant tubing and perform a variety of other exercises.
Resistant Tubing
Resistant tubing is an underrated piece of equipment for the home gym. Much like dumbbells and kettlebells, these are versatile, offering a multitude of ways to challenge your body. The difference with resistant tubing is that gravity is no longer your main source of resistance (as it is with other weights). With these, your resistance can come from any angle, opening a wide array of opportunities for new exercises.
