Herbal Supplements for Thin Hair

Many drugs, vitamins, tonics and other treatments are touted to remedy thinning hair. Conventionally, drugs and hair transplants show promise as a solution, but their long-term health consequences are unknown. Potential side effects also exist. For these reasons, many are turning to alternative medicine and herbal remedies for help. There are a few specific herbs that have been used not only to reduce thinning hair, but may stimulate the growth of new hair.

Ginkgo Biloba

One of the many benefits of ginkgo biloba is its ability to enhance circulation. Believing that this brings more blood and nutrients to the hair follicles on the scalp, this herb is often recommended by herbalists to encourage hair growth.

Horsetail

Rich in silica, this herb is known for its ability to strengthen the hair and nails. It can fortify the hair follicles resulting in new hair growth. Horsetail also contains many minerals, such as potassium and selenium, which are very beneficial to the health and strength of the hair.

Green Tea

Green tea boasts antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which are effective in reducing hair loss. It is found in many shampoos and hair treatments due to its ability to nurture the scalp and keep it healthy. Green tea also contains polyphenol catechins. These can help to block the enzymatic action that can trigger male hair loss.

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto can slow the loss of hair while promoting new growth. It is a good choice for men because it also has prostate protective properties. Saw palmetto is also believed to reduce DHT levels, which can block hair follicles, preventing growth.

Tea Tree Oil

This essential oil can fight against bacteria and mites that may be the culprit in hair loss. Using it as a massage for the scalp or adding a few drops to your regular shampoo can help. Its anti-microbial and anti-fungal actions are great for promoting scalp health.

Rosemary

Rosemary supplies the body with powerful antioxidants, which are beneficial in preventing hair loss. It can also increase circulation providing for better nourishment of the hair follicles.

Kelp

Sea vegetables are often called super foods in the natural health field. They are rich in amino acids and minerals. Kelp is often used as a solution for hair loss due to its antioxidant properties. It is believed to rejuvenate the scalp and provide essential nutrients for the growth of hair. In cases of thyroid induced hair loss, kelp is rich in iodine, which feeds the thyroid gland and may help eliminate associated symptoms.
