The birth of a new baby is a joyful occasion, however for those who want to expand their family or can't have children, adoption is just as happy an occasion. At first, adoption may seem scary and out of your reach, but following adoption protocol will allow you to be holding that new baby in little time. Before starting the adoption process, you must assess your own thoughts and feelings to ensure that you are emotionally prepared for this huge step. Once you are ready and your finances will allow for another member of your family, it is time to contact the right people and get the proverbial ball rolling.
Step 1
Research adoption laws in your state. Few states automatically exercise open adoption, meaning that in most cases, depending on your state laws, information regarding the adoption and biological parents will be sealed by a court of law. You may, however, opt to participate in an open adoption depending on your personal beliefs.
Step 2
Find a reputable adoption agency that specializes in the type of adoption you choose. These agencies can help you determine if your choice of closed or open adoption is right for you. Make sure that the agency you choose is properly licensed by calling your state adoption licensing department. An ideal agency offers pre- and post-adoption assistance to make the transition of bringing a baby into the home easier. It is also important that your chosen agency meets your financial expectations regarding fees and services.
Step 3
Participate in a series of home visits. An adoption agency social worker will make a series of visits to the home and ask for certain documentation such as medical statements regarding infertility issues and general health. You may also be asked to provide a statement about your upbringing and adult life achievements. This is done to help determine the best match for you when a baby is found for you. Financial statements, income, insurance coverage and debt reports may also be required, depending on the agency.

Find a private adoption attorney. You can find this type of attorney by contacting your state's bar association or asking referrals from adoption support groups in your area. A private adoption attorney will help you understand your state's legalities concerning agency adoptions and ensure that you are receiving the proper adoption services. Your attorney will also draw up papers regarding your adoption proceedings and request court dates from the clerk of court.
Step 5
Allow visitations with the baby that you and your selected agency agree on. This will allow the baby to get used to your home and family situation, encouraging proper bonding between you and the infant. Some cases may call for you to attend the birth of the child should you be matched with an expentant mother.
Step 6
Attend all adoption court proceedings. Normally there is one court hearing to request finalization of the adoption by a state or county judge. Once finalized, the baby can be brought into your home and you are allowed to sign the birth certificate as the child's parent. A copy of this certificate will be placed in agency and court records with the child's original birth certificate if one has already been issued. Records are then sealed in most states, keeping adoption information private.
