Developing acne and wrinkles at the same time seems to be mutually exclusive. Wrinkles result from dry skin and acne usually is the result of over-active oil glands. Doctors at the American Academy of Dermatologists report that the phenomenon is common and that there are measures and products you can use to treat both conditions.
Oil
Use oils that do not clog pores, but provide the moisturizer your face needs to prevent excessive wrinkling. Essential oils can provide antioxidant and cleansing properties that help to heal acne while treating dry skin. Look for products that have few preservatives that can irritate the skin. Essential oils that are best to treat acne and wrinkles include ylang ylang, lemon, sandalwood, tea tree and lavender oil. Orange, clary sage and geranium oil actually can dry up zits while moisturizing the skin. Good carriers for the essential oil ingredients include camellia and jojoba oil.
Moisturizers
Dermatologists at AARP recommend that seniors don't forgo moisturizers when they begin to get pimples. Instead, they report that moisturizing actually can help to alleviate acne. Try products such that contain ceramides and glycerin.
Acne Medication
Acne medication that contains glycolic or salicylic acid will help fight acne without drying out the skin, which can encourage wrinkling. Avoid acne products containing benzoyl peroxide as it dries the skin.
Retinoids
Dermatologists at the American Academy of Dermatologists report that products containing vitamin A, called retinoids, are ideal for combating the multiple conditions of wrinkles and acne. Products with vitamin A, such as Retin A, can remove the plugs that set into pores and cause blackheads and other acne lesions. Vitamin A has exfoliating properties that can erase the top layer of skin that holds the bacteria as well as the dry skin that causes wrinkles. It decreases inflammatory papules that form on the face. Vitamin A can help to even out skin discoloration that often happens with aging skin.
Products that have small amounts of retinoids can reduce the signs of aging while not contributing to rampant acne breakouts. Ziana, a prescription medication containing an antibiotic and retinoid, is recommended by AARP dermatologists for people with acne who want to fight wrinkles.
