How to Prevent Cold Sores

Cold sores, also referred to as fever blisters, occur commonly on the lips and occasionally on the nostrils, chin or fingers. This condition is caused by exposure to the herpes simplex virus that is passed from person to person through kissing or sharing items such as eating utensils, drinking glasses, razors and towels. Cold sore symptoms include a painful or tingling sensation that occurs one to two days before a small, painful, fluid-filled blister develops on a raised, red area of the skin. The blisters can appear one at a time or in groups. According to the Mayo Clinic, a cold sore clears up within seven to 10 days without treatment. Unfortunately, there aren't many things you can do to prevent this condition.

Step 1

Practice a healthy lifestyle that includes eating a balanced diet, exercising daily, sleeping well and avoiding emotional stress. According to the National Institutes of Health, healthy living can decrease the number of diseases and infections, including cold sores, that a person gets.

Step 2

Apply sunscreen to areas generally affected by cold sores. Some people get cold sores due to an extended amount of sun exposure.

Step 3

Apply lip moisturizer as needed to prevent dry or chapped lips.

Step 4

Take a daily dose of lysine if you get cold sores often. Lysine is an over-the-counter amino acid supplement that, according to the National Institutes of Health, can reduce cold sore outbreaks. Your physician can help you determine if this option is right for you.

Step 5

Wash your hands often, especially after touching or applying ointment to a cold sore, since this condition is contagious and can easily spread to other parts of your body. According to the Mayo Clinic, the eyes and genital area are susceptible to the spread of the virus that causes cold sores.

Step 6

Take steps toward not infecting others by avoiding kissing or sharing items such as utensils, towels and lip balm when blisters are present.

Things You'll Need
