3 Ways to Begin a Diet for Stomach Cancer

1. Evaluate Your Diet Limitations

Use trial and error to learn which foods are easiest on your stomach. Certain foods may upset digestion, so keep a food diary and write down what you eat and when you eat it. Also, make note of any symptoms you get and when they occur, so you can identify foods that may not be suitable for your diet. Foods high in fiber--such as whole-grain bread, rice, pasta, greens and beans--should be gradually introduced into your diet plan. You should try to avoid sugary foods, and focus on eating plenty of fruits, cooked vegetables, dairy products and protein-rich foods--such as red meat, fish or soy--in small quantities throughout the day. Eat slowly and in small portions at first to avoid feeling full.

2. Eat Foods Rich in Iron, Calcium and Vitamin D

Prepare meals and snacks that include foods rich in iron, calcium and vitamin D. Calcium is found in a variety of dairy products, such as milk and cheese. Broccoli and cabbage are also great sources of calcium, and so are eggs. When cooked, they are easily digestible and are great energy sources. Using butter to prepare eggs and oily fish is a good way to maximize your vitamin D consumption. Vitamin C stimulates iron absorption, so when eating iron-rich foods--red meat, fish, soy, eggs, leafy green vegetables and dried fruit--drink a small glass of orange juice 1 hour before or 1 hour after your meal.

3. Boost Nutrients Using Diet Supplements

A daily multivitamin can help ensure that your body gets the nutrients it needs. Choose a multivitamin that contains all the major vitamins and minerals. You may also want to add iron and vitamin C tablets as well, since the nutrients in the foods you digest may not always be fully absorbed. Liquid drinks, such as Ensure and Fresubin, are good ways to supplement your diet because they are easily digestible and have high calorie contents.
