The thigh area is one of the most common areas for women to get ingrown hairs, according to the Mayo Clinic. Ingrown hairs cause the area to become red and irritated. Once you notice an ingrown hair, you should wear loose pants to minimize the risk of further irritating the area. By doing this, you may notice that the ingrown hair doesn't require any further treatment to go away. It may take two to three weeks for the ingrown hair to fully heal.
Step 1
Exfoliate your legs before shaving. This removes dead skin that may cause hair follicles to close, which will minimize the risk of ingrown hairs in the thigh area.
Step 2
Shave using a sharp single-blade razor and shaving gel. Rinse the razor after each stroke.
Step 3
Apply cortisone cream to the area as soon as you notice the ingrown hair. This will reduce the irritation and help minimize the itching that is associated with the ingrown hair.
Step 4
Use moist heat on the area at least three times per day for 10 minutes at a time to speed healing. Soak a towel in the hottest water you can stand and place it on the area. Repeat the process when the towel begins to cool.
Step 5
Wash the area using an antibacterial soap that contains benzoyl peroxide when you take a bath or shower.
Step 6
Check the ingrown hair for an area of hair that is raised above the skin. If you see this area, which looks like an arch of hair, you can use a needle that has been sterilized in alcohol to gently pull up on this arch. The ingrown portion of the hair should come out easily. If you do this, put triple antibiotic ointment on the area to minimize the risk of infection.
