How to Avoid Menstrual Cramps

Menstrual cramping is a result of the uterus contracting to expel the lining that is formed during ovulation. This can cause mild to severe cramping. Disorders such as endometriosis can worsen menstrual cramps. Treatment at home can help you avoid monthly menstrual cramps while still allowing your body to work as it should during menstruation.

Step 1

Eat a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s are present in fish such as salmon and tilapia, and other foods such as walnuts and flax oil. Omega-3 fatty acids act as a natural anti-inflammatory, decreasing uterine contractions and swelling and ridding your body of menstrual cramps. This method should be started at any time as omega 3 fatty acids are beneficial for other conditions.

Step 2

Take birth control pills. Birth control increases hormone production and decreases instances of cramping and pain. Dr. Christiane Northrup recommends avoiding this option if you are a smoker as it can increase risk of blood clots. Birth control must be started one month before your next menstrual cycle in order to benefit quickly from this method.

Step 3

Limit your intake of high-glycemic carbohydrates and trans fats found in processed snack foods. Foods to limit include chips, sweets and frozen snack foods. Avoiding dairy and red meat may also help eliminate menstrual cramping by decreasing arachidonic acid levels responsible for heightened intensity of menstrual cramps. Avoiding the above foods two weeks before menstruation will give you the benefits before uterine contractions begin for that month's cycle.

Step 4

Take a daily multi-vitamin with vitamins C, B6 and E. Magnesium included in your daily supplement will also prove beneficial in eliminating menstrual cramping. Fish oil supplements provide omega 3 fatty acids, as well. Another ideal supplement to prevent menstrual cramping is black cohosh, found in many health food stores.

Step 5

Opt for acupuncture. This method uses small heated needles that are placed in the skin at various pressure points. This will eliminate menstrual cramping when performed properly by a licensed acupuncturist. This method is best used two weeks before your menstrual period, however it may also be done during menstruation also.
