An essential oil is the plant's essence, extracted through the process of distillation. Essential oils are used in aromatherapy, massage and alternative medicine. Some essential oils have medicinal qualities and may provide natural remedies for common skin conditions. As with any natural substance, there is a possibility of allergic reaction. Always test a small amount on the skin before applying to a larger area.
Essential Oils for Acne
Tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca oil, has been used in Australia and New Zealand for centuries as a natural antiseptic. A study by the Department of Dermatology of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Australia compared tea tree oil with conventional acne medicine in a clinical trial of patients with mild to moderate acne. Researchers found that the tea tree oil was as effective as benzoyl peroxide but with fewer side effects. Tea tree oil can be applied directly on the skin and should only be used topically.
Essential Oils for Eczema
Chamomile helps to relieve inflammation and irritation and is used by herbalists to treat a variety of conditions, including anxiety, insomnia, psoriasis, acne, eczema, first-degree burns and colitis as well as children's conditions such as chicken pox, diaper rash and colic. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, European studies show that German chamomile may be beneficial in treating mild eczema. This essential oil can be added to massage oil or lotion and applied directly on the infected area.
Essential Oils for Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a condition that results in dry, scaly skin and red blotches. It can be irritated by sun, stress or even viral and bacterial infections. It is difficult to treat and often does not respond to conventional treatments. Holistic health practitioners typically recommend a blend of essential oils for this condition, including bergamot (antiseptic and antispasmodic), cedarwood (antifungal, antiseptic and astringent), geranium (comforting and healing) and lavender (antibacterial and anti-inflammatory). Adding three to four drops of each oil to bath water daily may help reduce the symptoms of psoriasis.
Essential Oils for Skin Cancer
