Oily hair often looks flat and feels heavy, even soon after washing. Fine, light-colored hair has a greater chance of being oily. Those with straight hair are also more likely to suffer from an excess of oiliness than those with natural curls. If you are naturally predisposed to having oily hair, there isn't much you can do to completely eradicate the problem, but there's much you can do to treat it and transform your hair into vibrant, shiny locks.
Step 1
Wash your hair frequently, especially in summer or after physical activity. Shampooing every two days or even everyday is ideal for oily hair. Choose a shampoo that leaves no residue, such as clarifying shampoo. This will prevent residues from accumulating on the scalp, causing more oil to be released.
Step 2
Skip the conditioner unless the ends are dry. If you have split ends or damaged hair, apply conditioner on the lower third of your hair, away from the scalp. Don't use a two-in-one shampoo-and-conditioner mix.
Step 3
Rinse your hair with lemon water. Mix a cup of water with the fresh juice of a lemon and use it to rinse and massage your scalp. Rinse with cool water after a few minutes. Lemon is best for light hair, as it will give you natural highlights.
Step 4
Try an apple vinegar rinse. Mix a tablespoon of vinegar in a cup of water and use it to massage your scalp. Mix a second cup and rinse the whole length of your hair with it. Follow with a second rinse of plain cool water.
Step 5
Don't touch your hair too much. Avoid playing with your hair, brushing too often or touching or scratching your scalp frequently. This activates the production of oil and will worsen the problem. You can massage your scalp when shampooing to help clear the oil out, but avoid touching it after.
Step 6
Throw away mousses, gels and other products that are meant to set up hair. They will cause residue to accumulate on the scalp and increase the production of oil. Instead, blowdry your hair to set it up as you want without the need for products.
