Every woman wants strong, lengthy eyelashes because long eyelashes emphasize the eyes. Though women try to lengthen and darken their lashes with mascaras, some mascara does more harm than good. Several eyelash treatments are available, which lengthen the eyelashes without damaging them.

Prescription Treatments

One treatment to enhance eyelashes is a prescription eyelash serum called Latisse (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution), originally used to treat hypotrichosis. The serum is FDA-approved for the treatment of inadequate lash growth. The Latisse solution is applied to the upper eyelashes once a day and after 12 to 14 weeks, you should see an increase the volume and length of lashes.

Eyelash Conditioners

Several cosmetics brands have eyelash conditioners on the market, which may help lengthen eyelashes without a prescription. Products like Li Lash and Revitalash are serums which come in tubes usually with a wand to brush the solution onto your eyelashes with. They are said to speed lash growth after about six weeks of continually swiping the serum on the lashes once or twice per day.

Ingredients

According to "Scientific American," the active ingredient in prescription Latisse is bimatoprost, which comes from naturally occurring fatty acids involved in the growth of hair follicles. The main ingredients in most nonprescription lash conditioners are natural botanical extracts. Revitalash uses white lupine seed extract, which is said to stimulate cell metabolism, and sweet almond oil, which is said to strengthen the fiber of the hair.

Cost

Eyelash treatments can be fairly expensive, especially if they are used consistently, as one tube generally only lasts up to five or six months. Prescription treatments like Latisse are usually more expensive than over-the-counter treatments, and are rarely covered by insurance. "Scientific American" states that as of 2008, a one-month supply of Latisse costs $120. As of 2010, Li Lash eyelash conditioner was sold on the Li Lash company's website for around $140 for one tube.

Safety

Serums used for the growth of eyelashes are generally regarded as safe, when used as directed. Some people may experience irritation and even some stinging of the eyes. Eyelash treatments, especially prescription-strength treatments, should never be used on the bottom lashes, as they may cause the lower lashes to overgrow.
