Embarrassing for the sufferer and uncomfortable for those around them, underarm odor plays a significant role in creating awkward social scenarios. Some people are more prone to having body odor issues, with possible causes stemming from everything to medical conditions to improper hygiene. If you recently have discovered you have a problem with underarm odor, quick action and diligence will go a long way toward eliminating it.
Step 1
Watch what you eat and make changes to your diet that can help eliminate any odors that may be tied to your diet. Cut out refined sugars and avoid foods and spices with potent aromas such as garlic, kimchi and salami. Even certain beverages, such as coffee, tea and other caffeinated drinks, can dehydrate the body and contribute to odor problems. Drink at least eight glasses of water daily to keep your body hydrated.
Step 2
Bathe once or twice daily. It's often the bacteria rather than the sweat that is causing the odors. If you have a particularly bad odor, add two cups of tomato juice to your bath water and soak for at least 15 minutes. Be sure to pay special attention to key areas while bathing, such as under your arms as well as your feet and genital area.
Step 3
Apply an antiperspirant rather than a deodorant to help combat odors throughout the day. If you tend to sweat a lot, and antiperspirant isn't enough, use baking soda instead. Apply it under your arms and keep some with you throughout the day in case you need to reapply it. The baking soda will help to absorb both moisture and unpleasant odors.
Step 4
Wear loose-knit clothing that's not snug so that air can get to your skin. Tight clothing will only make you sweat more, so opt for clothes that give you a little extra room. Avoid wearing the same clothes twice and wash them after each time you wear them. Add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle of a wash load to help eliminate any lingering odors in your clothing.
Step 5
Take chlorophyll supplements with each meal per the dosage instructions. Chlorophyll can help to act as a deodorizer.
