The bond between a father and daughter is very special. Dr. Margaret Meeker, author of the book "Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters: 10 Secrets Every Father Should Know," says, "Fathers have a power in a daughter's life that mothers just don't have." With that in mind, daughters will want to show their love and appreciation for dad with a gift on his birthday or holidays. When gifting dad, remember his hobbies and interests. But in the long run, the most meaningful gift is one from the heart.
Spend the Day Doing What He Likes
If dad loves football, take him to the big game. If your dad is a runner, enter the two of you in a local 5K. Whatever your father likes, show him you care enough to learn more about his hobbies or passions. For this day, dad comes first, so even if you would much rather see the romantic comedy playing just next door, try your best to enjoy the documentary on science fiction films of the 1950's. You might just find that you and dad have a lot more in common than you thought.
Make a Scrapbook or Movie
Tear through the attic or basement and get out all the old family photos of you and dad. Organize them into a scrapbook, adding in ticket stubs from your first ballet recital, postcards from the family vacation and old greeting cards. Write your thoughts and memories on each page. If you are tech-savvy and have access to a scanner, scan the old photos and memorabilia into the computer and make a multi-media movie for dad.
Dad Day
Proclaim Sunday (or any day) "Dad Day." On this day, dad is exempt from any chores. Dad is free to sleep late, watch the game undisturbed or with the family or friends. Make sure the fridge is stocked with all of dad's favorite treats and beverages.
Make His Favorite Cake or Meal
Show your appreciation for dad by making his favorite chocolate cream pie for dessert or baking his favorite meatloaf. If his favorite meal is from a restaurant, search the Internet for a recipe for a similar dish. Having dad come home to the scent of a big pot of his favorite chili made from scratch by his daughter will be a welcome and thoughtful surprise.
