6 Ways to Use Different Medications for OCD

1. Look for Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)

SSRIs are the most common form of medication used to treat OCD. They are a family of antidepressants that include Paxil (paroxetine hydrochloride), Prozac (fluoxetine hydrochloride), Zoloft (sertraline hydrochloride) and Luvox (fluvoxamine). Though there is a lot about obsessive-compulsive disorder that scientists still don't understand, SSRIs seem to be effective in treating the symptoms of the condition. They affect the serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that moves between the brain's synapses and plays a large part in thought processes. SSRIs increase serotonin levels, alleviating the symptoms of depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

2. Try an Older Tricyclic Antidepressant

Tricyclic antidepressants were used before the advent of SSRIs. The most prevalent brand on the market today is Anafranil (clomipramine). Like SSRIs, they regulate the levels of serotonin in the brain as well as levels of a different neurotransmitter called norepinephrine. The main difference (and the reason they have largely been supplanted by SSRIs) is that it takes a much smaller percentage of tricyclic antidepressants in the body to trigger a toxic reaction, making them a far more viable option in a suicide attempt. If you're not a suicide risk, however, it can be an effective treatment.

3. Use the Medication for Some Time Before Expecting Any Results

When you take anti-OCD medication, be ready to wait 2 to 3 months before it has an effect. The brain's biochemistry is very delicate, and you need to give the medication time to be absorbed by the brain. The slow buildup means that you should always take your medication in regular prescribed doses and be patient while waiting for an impact.

4. Know the Side Effects of OCD Medication

All types of OCD medication have side effects, though they are not directly harmful and usually fade once you go off of it. They include sleeplessness, excitability, weight gain and inhibited sexual functions. They may also have an adverse effect on pregnant women and children. A prescribing physician should be able to explain any possible side effects to you in detail.

5. Always Follow Your Psychiatrist's Recommendations

OCD medications are usually only available by prescription, and dosages vary from patient to patient. Never attempt to self-medicate or alter the dosage of your prescription without speaking to your doctor first.
