According to the University of Minnesota, essential oils play a very distinct role in massage therapy, and masseurs choose these oils for their specific properties and according to the desires of the person receiving the massage. In addition, some masseurs use aromatherapy with essential oils to help the client further relax and unwind. Researching some commonly used essential oils and understanding their uses is very important for the masseur to achieve optimal results during the massage therapy.
Relaxation/Stress Relief
Essential oils such as chamomile, sandalwood and lavender are examples of essential oils that can help to promote relaxation and relieve stress during a massage. These oils can be used topically as part of the actual massage, or diffused in the room for their aromatherapy benefits. In addition, these oils can also be used in combination with one another to enhance the experience. For example, some therapists and clients may choose to massage with chamomile and lavender while diffusing with sandalwood.
Depression
Lavender and jasmine are examples of essential oils that can help relieve depression. According to Vanderbilt University, a 2003 pilot study showed that there was a 30 percent improvement in a person's mood after massage with an essential oil used precisely for depression. Lavender and jasmine oils can be topically applied to the entire body to help reduce depression. These oils can also be combined. In addition, diffusing the massage room with either jasmine or lavender is a great way to help lower levels of depression before the actual massage begins.
Muscle Aches and Soreness
Some essential oils, such as peppermint and lemongrass, are specifically used during massage therapy to treat aching or sore muscles. It is best to apply the oil and let it penetrate the skin for at least 15 before beginning the massage so that there will be less discomfort for the client. Some masseurs also like to diffuse the massage room with peppermint oil to relax their clients through aromatherapy.
