Allegra (fexofenadine HCl) is an antihistamine medication that treats allergy symptoms including sneezing; runny nose; itchy nose, palate and throat; and itchy, watery, red eyes. This medication does not cause drowsiness. It is usually taken twice daily, with or without food. Limit alcoholic beverages while taking Allegra, because it may intensify side effects. Do not use Allegra while pregnant or breast-feeding unless approved by your physician. Fruit juices such as grapefruit, orange and apple may reduce the bioavailability and exposure of Allegra and should be avoided while on this medication.
Stomach Upset
You may experience stomach upset, including nausea and vomiting or menstrual pain while taking Allegra. These side effects may diminish over time as your body gets used to this medication. Eating smaller meals more frequently and avoiding spicy foods may help to combat nausea. If you experience severe vomiting, you may be at risk for dehydration. Drink an adequate amount of fluids during this time. If you begin to suffer from moderate to severe menstrual pain, you may take an over-the-counter pain analgesic such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen for relief.
Dizziness
Some people experience dizziness while on Allegra. You may want to use caution while driving or operating machinery until you know how this medication may affect you. If dizziness becomes severe and you are unable to complete your daily activities, contact your health care provider.
Cold or Flu
You may experience cold or flu symptoms while taking Allegra. This may include runny or stuffy nose, cough, body aches or fatigue. These symptoms may diminish over time. If you experience a fever, or severe flu-like symptoms, you may have an infection and should be seen by your physician.
