Propecia & Side Effects

Propecia (finasteride) is an oral medication intended for the treatment of specific forms of male pattern baldness in men. Propecia decreases the levels of DHT (5α-dihydrotestosterone), the primary cause of hair loss in men. Women should not use or handle this medication, especially during pregnancy, because the active ingredient in this medication can cause birth defects in male infants. Discuss any concerns you may have with your doctor regarding the use of Propecia and potential side effects before you begin treatment.

Ejaculatory Problems

A study cited by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that 1.2 percent of 945 men who took 1 mg Propecia for 1 year experienced some type of ejaculation disorder. Of these subjects, 0.8 percent reported a decrease in the volume of ejaculate produced upon orgasm. In contrast, of the 934 men who received placebo, ejaculation disorder or decreased volume of ejaculate were reported by 0.7 percent and 0.4 percent of subjects, respectively.

Breast Tenderness

Certain men can experience changes in the breast tissue while receiving treatment with Propecia. An increase in breast size, the appearance of lumps within the breast or breast tenderness or pain can develop as side effects of taking this medication. Abnormal nipple discharge has also been reported during Propecia treatment. These symptoms should be immediately reported to your doctor.

Testicular Pain

While taking Propecia, you can develop pain within your testicles. The testicles are two small male organs that store and produce sperm. Pain can be mild to moderate in severity and can be uncomfortable for some patients. Symptoms typically resolve after stopping Propecia treatment.

Sexual Disturbances

Less than 2 percent of men receiving Propecia treatment experience sexual side effects due to this medication, based on estimates provided by the Propecia product website. Symptoms of sexual disturbances include decreased sexual desire (libido) and an inability to develop or maintain an erection (impotence). These symptoms subside once treatment with Propecia has ended. If these side effects significantly interfere with your intimate relationships, seek additional guidance from your doctor.

Allergic Reaction

If you take Propecia, you can develop an allergic reaction to this medication. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include skin rash, itching or hives. You can also develop swelling of the face or lips. Such symptoms require immediate medical attention.
