How to Keep Underarms From Sweating

While sweating serves a purpose (it regulates body temperature), it can also be bothersome. Whether the problem is the odor or the stain on your clothes, sweating can be embarrassing. While there is no definite way to stop sweating except removal of the sweat glands, there are things that can be done to temporarily reduce or eliminate underarm sweating.

Step 1

Take daily showers. In very hot or humid weather, shower or clean the underarm area twice a day or as needed. If you're going to reapply deodorant, clean the underarm area before you do it. If washing is not doable during the day, carry wet towelettes with you and use those to wipe the area clean.

Step 2

Buy antiperspirant instead of deodorant. Deodorant prevents the bacteria that creates odor from generating, but it won't help you stop sweating. Antiperspirant will stop the sweat from forming. Sports deodorants are sometimes stronger and more likely to stop sweating.

Step 3

Keep cool. Because you sweat when your body is hot, find ways to keep your body temperature down. Work in well-ventilated rooms and use an air conditioner when possible. Drink cold liquids and use cold water to wet the back of your neck or your head, as this will lower your body temperature. You can also put the underside of your wrists under running tap water to cool them down.

Step 4

Shave regularly. If you're a man and don't want to shave, cut underarm hair shorter, so there's less hair. This allows air to circulate better and prevents moisture from pooling in the area.

Step 5

Ask your pharmacist for 20 percent aluminium chloride. This is a solution that is sometimes contained in strong antiperspirants, but it can also be bought as a powder. You should apply the powder at night and wash it off in the morning. This should be done several times a week until the condition improves.

Step 6

Talk to your doctor about Botox injections. When injected into the sweat glands, Botox causes them to stop working, so you won't sweat anymore. The treatment lasts up to eight months, after which the injections need to be repeated. Keep in mind that treatment is painful and takes about 30 minutes.
