Acne breakouts can occur in people of all ages, but most commonly appear on skin that is experiencing excessive oil production that results from hormonal surges. Hormonal surges most frequently occur during puberty, pregnancy, menstruation and menopause. Luckily, you can help cure acne breakouts by following a simple routine that cleanses the skin without irritating it, treats the skin with an antibacterial oil and spot-treats the breakouts with a natural lotion that will dry up the bacteria and clogged pores.
Step 1
Wash your skin very gently using a fragrance-free soap. Wet your skin thoroughly with water. Lather your hands well with a fragrance-free soap, and gently spread the lather onto your skin. Cover the entire affected area with lather, then rinse off the skin with water. Repeat twice per day.
Step 2
Apply diluted tea tree oil directly to the active acne pustules. Fill an empty bottle with 8 oz of water and pour 5 drops of tea tree oil into it. Soak a cotton ball in the diluted tea tree oil and apply it to the skin affected by acne. Repeat up to three times a day.
Step 3
Spot-treat pus-filled acne using Calamine lotion. Shake a bottle of Calamine lotion, and cover the end of a cotton swab with the lotion. Dab the Calamine lotion onto the active acne breakouts, and allow the lotion to dry completely. You can wash off the Calamine lotion after one hour, or leave it on overnight for a more intensive treatment. Repeat up to three times a day.
Tips and Warnings
- Useful Information: Using a soap that is free of artificial fragrances will prevent the skin from becoming irritated or inflamed while you're washing it. Avoid scrubbing or rubbing your skin, which can exacerbate acne and inhibit the skin's ability to heal irritations. According to the Department of Dermatology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, tea tree oil can be used to kill acne-causing bacteria as well as benzoyl peroxide cream, but will not cause the damaging side effects that benzoyl peroxide can, such as peeling, redness or itching. Calamine lotion is typically used to relieve itching and dry up blisters caused by the chicken pox virus. Many people do not realize that Calamine lotion is an effective and safe spot treatment for pus-filled acne breakouts, and can be left on the skin safely for up to 10 hours.
