When the pores on the face are enlarged, it can cause bacteria, dirt, sebum and oils to become trapped inside them, leading to acne breakouts. In order to prevent the skin from becoming clogged, it is important to follow a routine that effectively removes any entrapment, prevents impurities from entering the pores and increases the rate at which the skin turns over to allow new skin cells to replace the old. By following this skin-care routine, the pores can become smaller and tighter.
Step 1
Flush out the pores with a non-comedogenic oil, such as olive oil, which will help remove impurities from the pores and will allow the pores to shrink to a smaller size. Spread 1 tbsp. of olive oil onto your face, and use your fingers to massage the oil into your skin for three minutes. Fill a bowl with nearly boiling water, and lean 18 inches over the water. Cover your head with a towel, letting the steam billow over your face for at least five minutes. When the allotted time has passed, use a damp washcloth to remove the oil. Repeat two times per day.
Step 2
Remove dead skin cells and impurities from the skin that could become trapped inside the pores and prevent the pores from becoming smaller. Pour 1 tbsp. of baking soda into a small bowl, and add 1 to 2 tsp. of water. Spread the mixture onto your face, and move your fingers around in circular motions for two minutes. Rinse off your skin with water. Repeat two times per day.
Step 3
Increase skin cell turnover by applying a vitamin C compress, which will encourage new skin cells to develop faster while helping the dead skin cells slough away more quickly. Soak five cotton pads in concentrated lemon juice, and use your fingers to squeeze the excess juice out. Place the pads onto your face--one for your chin, one for each cheek, and two for the forehead area. Leave the pads on your skin for at least 10 minutes, then remove them to let the skin dry. Repeat two times per day.
Tips and Warnings
- Helpful Information: Olive oil is a non-pore-clogging oil that can be used to flush out pores without clogging the skin. The olive oil combines with the blockages in the pores, which can then be flushed out when the face is steamed. The steam forces open the pores, allowing both the impurities and the olive oil to drain out. Lemon juice is very high in vitamin C, which can be used safely on the skin to increase the rate at which the skin turns over. This cell turnover keeps the pores free of impurities, and allows the pores to become and remain smaller in size.
