Excedrin Sinus Ingredients

A headache is a symptom that will affect most people at some point in life. Common types of headaches are cluster headaches, tension headaches, migraine headaches and sinus headaches. Symptoms of a sinus headache include pain in your cheeks or forehead, pain that worsens when leaning forward, yellow or green nasal discharge, sore throat, fever, cough and fatigue, according to the Mayo Clinic. Fortunately, there are over-the-counter (OTC) medications that can be used to treat sinus headaches, such as Excedrin Sinus. As with all medications, you should be aware of the ingredients and possible side effects.

Acetaminophen 325mg

According to Excedrin.com, acetaminophen 325mg is an active ingredient in Excedrin Sinus. Acetaminophen is a pain reliever that works by inhibiting chemical signals that are related to pain that you may be experiencing with a sinus headache. Acetaminophen can also reduce fever. This ingredient, however, does not have the same anti-inflammatory properties as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAID). Acetaminophen can cause severe liver damage if not taken as directed. According to Drugs.com, you should not exceed 1g of acetaminophen per dose or more than 4g per day. Symptoms of overdose include dark urine, chalky stools and right-sided abdominal pain. Make sure you are not taking other medications that contain acetaminophen. Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect you have overdosed on this ingredient.

Phenylephrine 5mg

Phenylephrine 5mg is an active ingredient in Excedrin Sinus. Phenylephrine is a decongestant that shrinks blood vessels in your nose to relieve sinus congestion. Because this ingredient constricts blood vessels, it may have an effect on your blood pressure. Other side effects of phenylephrine include dizziness, restlessness, nervousness, trouble sleeping, unusual thoughts or behavior, faintness, irregular heartbeat, tremors, numbness in your extremities or trouble urinating, according to Drugs.com. Do not use phenylephrine longer than recommended. Your symptoms may become worse if suddenly discontinued after using for seven days.

Inactive Ingredients

Inactive ingredients, or excipients, are substances that help with ease of use or support the active ingredient in medications. The inactive ingredients in Excedrin Sinus are benzoic acid, carnauba wax, corn starch, FD&C blue # 1, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, mineral oil, polysorbate 20, povidone, propylene glycol, simethicone emulsion, sorbitan monolaurate, stearic acid and titanium dioxide. Consult your doctor if you are allergic to any of these ingredients before taking Excedrin Sinus.
