3 Ways to Create Meals for the Beverly Hills Diet

1. Timing Is Everything on the Beverly Hills Diet

Follow the rules of "conscious combining", the main principle of the Beverly Hills Diet. According to the rules of conscious combining, fruits should be eaten only with other fruits, carbohydrates should be eaten with other carbohydrates and proteins should be eaten with proteins. Fats such as butter and olive oil may be consumed with carbohydrates or proteins. You need to wait 2 hours before switching from one food group to another, and once you switch from fruits to carbohydrates, you should not consume any more fruit for rest of the day. Once you eat protein, the rest of your meals should be comprised of 80 percent protein. In addition, you should avoid diet beverages and caffeine whenever possible. Surprisingly, alcohol is allowed, and should be considered a carbohydrate (except for wine, which is considered a fruit).

2. Getting Back on Track After a Slip

Author Judy Mazel created an eating plan for those times when you stray off the diet called "conscious compensation." The primary purpose for creating mini meals from this plan is to counterbalance a day of "miscombining," which is essentially eating foods out of order or combining the wrong type of foods. Mazel recommends different fruits to counterbalance bloating and weight gain. She suggests eating pineapples or strawberries to burn away the fat in greasy foods. She recommends eating papaya or mango if you're feeling weighed down due to excessive protein consumption. She contends these fruits soften fat and protein deposits. She also suggests eating grapes to cleanse the body after overdosing on sweets. You can use conscious compensation as part of your meal planning. If you know you're going to be eating something off the diet plan, you can eat these fruit combinations beforehand to counterbalance the effect of unhealthy foods on the digestive system.

3. The Beverly Hills Version of a Free-For-All

Once a day you have the option of eating an "open meal." You get to break the rules of conscious eating by combining carbohydrates and proteins along with fats. The "New Beverly Hills Diet" lists up to 21 different suggestions for "open meal" ideas. Most people choose to eat this meal for dinner, but you can eat it any time of the day. The best way to stick to the diet is to choose foods from the menus in the book.
