As you age, the skin around your eyes starts to thin out and loses its natural elasticity, which leads to the appearance of wrinkles. Fine lines usually first appear around the eyes and mouth. Certain lifestyle choices can affect how soon you develop wrinkles around the eyes ("crow's feet" and under-eye wrinkles). Smoking and sun exposure can lead to premature wrinkling. Stop smoking and always wear sunblock with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher while outside to prevent worsening of the condition.
Step 1
Use a retinol-based eye cream. Topical retinol creams are derived from vitamin A and can be used to get rid of the fine lines that appear under the eyes. Use the cream on a nightly basis to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles. One example of a retinol-based product is RoC Retinol Correxion Eye Cream.
Step 2
Ask about Botox treatment. A small injection of Botox administered below the lower lashes can temporarily correct under-eye wrinkles by paralyzing the muscles in the area. Botox is also an effective treatment for crow's feet. Repeat injections are required for continuous results.
Step 3
Speak to a dermatologist about other procedures that may get rid of eye wrinkles. Injectable fillers like collagen can plump up the skin above and below the eyes and also work well for crow's feet. Results last an average of six months. During dermabrasion to reduce fine wrinkling around the eyes, the skin is sanded down with a rotating brush. This generates new skin growth and collagen production. Laser skin resurfacing can significantly reduce wrinkling on both the upper and lower eyelids. During a chemical peel, an acidic solution is placed on the skin to dissolve the top layers of the epidermis. Multiple treatments may be required for these procedures to achieve optimal results.
Step 4
Meet with a plastic surgeon. If you want a more aggressive treatment for eye wrinkles, you might consider an eyelid lift. Excess skin and fat are removed under the eyes to give a tighter and less wrinkled look. Results last an average of five to 10 years, and side effects include temporary bruising and swelling.
Tips and Warnings
- Drink a lot of water, at least six to eight glasses a day, to help keep the skin supple and hydrated. Wear sunglasses to help you stop squinting. Squinting encourages the development of wrinkling around the eyes.
