How to Cure Dandruff

Dandruff, also called Pityriasis capitis is a common scalp problem affecting millions of individuals worldwide. This skin condition is caused by numerous factors which include dry, sensitive skin or skin diseases such as psoriasis and eczema. In addition, certain chemicals such as styling agents, hair dyes or shampoos can cause the scalp to become very itchy and dry and the layers of the skin to shed flaky dandruff.

Step 1

Use an anti-dandruff shampoo every day. There are many anti-dandruff shampoos available over the counter. When purchasing this type of shampoo, make sure it contains selenium sulfide or zinc pyrithione. These ingredients can help reduce the growth of the skin cells on the scalp and produce less dandruff. Using an anti-dandruff shampoo daily can eliminate dandruff in about two to three weeks.

Step 2

Apply a high quality hair conditioner after shampooing your hair to help stop dandruff from occurring. Applying conditioners moisturizes the hair and scalp and prevents the scalp from becoming dry. When hair is too dry, dandruff develops. Look for conditioners which have vitamin E, minerals and sunscreen. Avoid conditioners with oxide, laureth or petroleum derivatives, as these chemicals can irritate and dry the scalp.

Step 3

Massage 1 tbsp. of aloe vera gel or vitamin E oil directly to dry hair and scalp. Leave the aloe vera gel or vitamin E oil on your scalp overnight and shampoo hair in the morning. Applying aloe vera gel or vitamin E can help loosen the dandruff so it can easily be washed off. These can also help keep your scalp moisturized, preventing dandruff outbreaks in the future.
